PE Curriculum
PE Curriculum Intent Statement
At Wimborne First school, the Physical Education (PE) curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Rooted in our school values — we are nurturing, we are responsible, and we are aspirational — our PE provision goes beyond physical skills, supporting the development of the whole child.
-
We are nurturing: Our PE curriculum fosters a safe and inclusive environment where every child feels supported to try new things, build confidence, and develop resilience. Through teamwork, collaboration, and positive reinforcement, pupils learn the value of encouragement, empathy, and mutual respect, regardless of ability.
-
We are responsible: Pupils are taught to take ownership of their health, fitness, and personal development. Through structured activities, they develop self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, and an understanding of fair play. PE provides a platform for learning how to make healthy choices and to behave with integrity both on and off the field.
-
We are aspirational: Our curriculum encourages pupils to set personal goals, challenge themselves, and strive for excellence. By introducing a variety of sports and physical challenges, pupils are inspired to discover their strengths and pursue their ambitions — whether that means representing the school, leading peers, or simply achieving their personal best.

Curriculum Implementation
Due to our adoption of the Complete PE scheme. we implement a well-structured and engaging PE curriculum that adheres to the national curriculum while also considering the unique needs of our pupils. Our curriculum covers a wide range of activities including athletics, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and team sports. Each unit is carefully planned to build on prior learning and to encourage progression and depth in skill acquisition. We integrate PE with other subjects, such as science (understanding the body and health), PSHE (Healthy Me) and mathematics (measuring distances and times), enriching the educational experience and demonstrating the relevance of physical education in everyday life. By ensuring that our facilities are safe and equipped with appropriate resources, we create an environment where children feel confident to take risks and learn from their experiences in PE.
Extracurricular Activities: Our school offers a variety of after-school clubs and competitions that encourage pupils to engage in physical activity beyond the timetabled curriculum. This inclusivity supports children's different interests and promotes community participation.
The objectives of teaching PE in our school are to enable children to:
- To develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
1.1 Pupils will become increasingly co-ordinated and skilled through refining and controlling their actions, whilst also selecting and applying skills and tactics.
1.2 Pupils will improve their observational skills by describing and making judgements on their own and others work. They will then use these observations to improve their own performance.
- To become physically active for sustained periods of time
2.1 Pupils will develop an understanding of the effects of the exercise on the body, and an appreciation of the value of safe exercising.
- To engage in competitive sports and activities
3.1 Pupils develop the ability to work independently, and communicate with and respond positively towards others
- To lead healthy, active lives.
- To promote an understanding of safe practice, and develop a sense of responsibility towards their own and others’ safety and well-being

Impact:
Teachers and staff use their professional judgement to observe children over the period of each half term. They use assessment strands, which include demonstrating fundamental movements in isolation and also applying to sports and physical activities, to make a judgement based within age-related expectations, above or below at the end of each half-term. By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.
